Tips wanted for saving energy bills.....

Does anybody have ideas to save energy bill? My children are careless and often forget to switch off TVs and other appliances. I am looking for something that can turn off everything when we are not in. Any suggestion?

    Hi sam07,

Our house gets quite cold and drafty in the evenings, but instead of turning on the heating and wasting a lot of money, we've bought draught excluders from a company called Easylife who have lots of products to help save energy around the home. They might have something to help you too

I actually found a discount code (5% off all orders) on this website: EasyLife Discount Codes

    I hope this helps!

    hi.
i have my tv , video recorder all on one remote socket , so once switched off then all the equipment linked to that remote automatically switches off , also its easy to switch back on when required. i also have a FREE energy monitor , so if i am leaving the house , i take a glance at the monitor & it tells me if i have left something on in the house by the amount of energy being consumed , i use just over 110 watts to run the burglar alarm , telephones , etc ,anything substantially above this warns me that i have left something running useing electric.
one example of saving was the microwave even on standby mode cost over £200 over 3 years just to be stood on the kitchen worktops not being used , so now we switch it off at the wall socket when not in use, i know this by the reading on the enregy monitor.
you can purchase the remotes for about £16 for 3 plus the control handset , i also have the main light on a remote from the ceiling so that when not needed i switch off from my armchair, i have also invested in led lights over the years as i have re-decorated or improved the rooms, i hope this helps a little , as far as training the children to switch off when not in use is another problem.

very good tips robotrobo, is it just a universal remote that takes care of all that?

The energy meter's a great idea!!!! I want to see how much certain things use. I'd also like to see if putting water outside to freeze last thing at night, then putting in the fridge next to cold goods would cause any difference in fridge energy consumption. I'd only do this due to the fact I have to open the door to the outside world for the dog at these times, I'm sure it'd do very little and would not be worth letting the heat out into the cold winters night!

I try to turn everything off that I can, a few people I know go as far as turning their fuses off when they leave the house, this can be beneficial for older fuse boxes, but less so for newer ones. Obviously not to do the one that controls the fridge!

I see a lot of people having all their computer gear set-up on one power board. I keep my wifi router on a different power socket to my desktop computer & printing gear as it's on all the time my laptop is and I don't need the desktop sitting on standby eating up electricity.
