I did a staycation in Hong Kong for a year and loved it. I've thought about this and I think it obviously depends where you go. Accommodation is the most expensive thing so if you can find somewhere that fits your requirements and take out a short-term let you can save money. It also took me a while to find cheap places to shop because in the beginning you shop like a tourist but after a while you become more familiar. If you want to go for a reason like learning the language ect go for a staycation. But IMO you can beat moving around and experiencing different things even if it does cost a little more.
