Hi all, I've had to move out of my house (due to not being able to work because of severe carpal tunnel & detached tendons) and am not moving my BT broadband or phone number to a new property, for a start you have to give them 14 days notice and then they charge you £30 (only 4 years ago it was supposedly £6! wonder what happened to increase the price 5 times!?) to disconnect the broadband connection.

IF you do want to cancel or are moving house I found the best number to achieve this is the free phone: 0800 100 400

interestingly when trying to get my contract started it took over 3 hours on hold, however to get them to cancel the BT phoneline and broadband the call took less than 10 minutes. Seems they have better service for those leaving than they do for those joining, very odd!

In 2004 Virgin broadband were the other way around, 10 minutes to join, 3 hours to leave and even then (on yet another 3 hour phonecall) they said "oh no, there's no record of you ever cancelling" I sent them a copy of the phone bill with the 3 hour call to Virgin, yet even then they insisted I hadn't cancelled. I ended up getting my bank to stop the direct debit and ask for a chargeback. i told ofcom and watchdog about this, nothing wsa done and after 7 years I've heard Virgin are still practicing this tactic of holding people on after their contract is over and stating there had never been a cancel call!
