I personally don't because I plan on moving in to bigger places so I generally just shop at Ikea. I think once I am settled in a house I'll start to invest.
When you are buying big pieces of furniture for your home, such as sofas or dining room suites do you tend to buy pieces which are built to last and are a real investment? Or do you buy pieces which look great for the time being but maybe will only last 5 or so years?
When I look round my parents home a lot of the furniture they have is still in use from when I was a child - thirty *cough* years ago. But in my home, I wonder how much of our furniture will still be around in 20 or 30 years time.
What do you think?

I think you have a point @newboilerguy I think we tend to move around more these days than our parents did, so thus we probably wait until we have settled before spending the proper money on furniture. Harveys has a great up to 50% sale on at the moment if you are interested.
Depends which item your talking about with me. I will spend the extra to get a dining table thats going to last. because its unlikely that it will fall to unfortunate accidents. However sofas can be built to last but a wine spillage can ruin it and force you to buy a new one anyway. Again things I expect to break or things I know wont last, kids beds and other furniture the kids use a lot I tend to try and get free via freecycle or pay cheaply for as I know it wont last and will need replacing.
HarryL, welcome to the forum, very good thinking indeed, I made the mistake of paying too much for a sofa and within a few weeks egonogg was spilt on it! Managed to get it out, but it took a lot of work!
I've got a few things from freecycle, a computer desk and chair have been very good, as well as some speakers a retired electrician saved from the tech-rubish heap! FC Can be a very useful resource!

I think if you can keep an eye out for sales, then you can pick up some real bargains - Harveys has an up to 50% off sale at the moment so you can pick up lovely three seater sofas for £399 for example. But I agree Gav it's great to reuse and upcycle too! Think of the environment!
