I hadn't tried the speakers out, but just tried watching Flight of the Conchords - Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros and the sound is rather lousy, will try it out with headphones soon and see how that goes.
Problem after problem with my HP dv6 pavillion, screen had to be replaced then a year later after it was out of warranty it stopped working again, I never should have gone for HP as I've had a few problems with them in the past.
My wife has had a Toshiba laptop for over 3 years with no problems, it doesn't get the use my computers do, however over 3 years it's been perfect compared to the 2 years of the HP.
I decided one of the cheapest and smallest Toshibas I could find would be a good starting point, I went with: Satellite T110-121 - Product Specifications - Toshiba purchased at Dabs Toshiba Satellite T110-121 Celeron 743 2GB 250GB 11.6" Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit Laptop (PST1AE-01J00GEN) - dabs.com also available from amazon: Toshiba Satellite T110-121 - 11.6 inch notebook (Celeron ULV 743, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB HDD, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit preinstalled): Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories I personally chose Dabs so I could get the free DVD drive as it had the offer "Claim your free External Super Multi Drive!!!" you have to register your laptop and send off your original receipt plus a copy of the registration info. I had a voucher with dabs that was a day out of date for £10 off, they accepted it anyway!
now for the review, only been using it for 1 day so can't give it an in-depth review yet, after the first day I love it, the main problem so far is the small shift key on the right hand side. I often end up with "/i" when I try to write a capital "I".
My typing still slow from carpal tunnel surgery so can't give it a great review yet, but if you're after a lightweight laptop with decent computing power a great battery life (been running 4 hours and sitting at 49% with 3 hours and 59 minutes left) and a nice bright screen then this machine is awesome!
I will keep you updated with the computer as I get software installed, need the free DVD drive to install Photoshop to give it a good test of computing power, but for email and web surfing this machine is brilliant!
probably the best machine for internet on the move I've used so far. A computer with actual computing power, great battery life and a nice light weight for carrying. The battery does take a long time to charge though!

I was asked about the specs of my machine and whether it's easy to get online, I use a BT home broadband hub, and use their BTFon and BTopenzone with no problems, none of the awful bt fon & openzone local access only or limited connectivity which has plagued many Vista users. That being said my wife's Toshiba on Vista had no problems connecting to btfon and btopenzone, where as my HP did.
as for the specs, here's the one I have purchased.

today got a postal letter from Toshiba saying that the Original receipt from dabs.com was not valid for the free DVD drive! this is ludicrous! Time to write an email.

when I sent the original letter in to get the free DVD drive I sent the receipt that came in the box, but this was a "delivery receipt" not an invoice. I have to send back the invoice within 21 days of the date on the letter, dated 11/10/2010, arrived 25/10/2010, 2 weeks, really! Even Royal Mail can't be that bad! Seems that Toshiba are trying very hard to get out of the free DVD drive promotion.
Toshiba's original instructions were do not send a print out of an order receipt, but now I've got an email stating:
Good afternoon
Thank you for your e-mail.
Please print your e-invoice and re-submit your claim as per the invalidation letter.
Kind regards
Toshiba Team

That seems to be a tedious job. They are just lucky that you are a very patient customer. But anyway, I think you made a good choice with Toshiba.
the DVD drive came through the snow to me! Finally installed Photoshop yesterday, gotta find my disk of office now so I can get a few excel files a few companies offering deals have sent me.
some good deals on your site by the way.

I've been testing this laptop for a bit now, getting better with the keyboard and I must say it's a fantastic piece of kit. with the DVD drive it plays DVDs flawlessly, photoshop 4 runs smoothly for simple photo editng whilst having firefox (about 15 tabs open) and windows live mail running in the background. I had to close FF when I had a few 1DS MkIII raw photos open in photoshop, but it didn't slow much.
