Chris Watson is a sound recordist best known for his work on BBC wildlife documentaries The Life of Mammals and The Life of Birds (for which he won a BAFTA Award for Best Factual Sound 1998). Before turning to this career, he was a musician, co-founding both Cabaret Voltaire (1971) and the Hafler Trio (1981). He has since released music projects on Touch, including Weather Report, named in The Guardian's ‘1000 Albums to Hear Before You Die.’
Chris Watson will give a talk as part of a series of events around his remarkable sound installation Whispering in the Leaves at Kew Gardens’ Palm House. The installation immerses visitors in the dawn and dusk choruses of wildlife native to the Central and South American rainforests.
Watson will introduce his work as a sound recordist, describing the elements and field-craft behind on-location recording, as well as the application of sound recordings in a range of media: radio, cd, film, installation and live performance.
