Hi Gav (and everyone). We are in the process of developing as spa retreat boutique hotel in Asia and we strongly considering making it child free (under 12 or 16). The retreat will not really be suitable for children anyway so it makes sense to capitalise on the appeal of a child free environment which I am sure would specifically attract couples, honeymooners, mature couples and friends that desire a peaceful retreat hotel. I guess it is a case of weighing up whether greater business would be generated by offering this child free policy against any lost business from families. As I said to be honest it wouldn't really suit kids anyway (no playground or child play areas and generally all rooms sleep 2 (some 3). Was hoping to source a report or statistics that had been compiled on the subject but cannot find one. I notice some hotels allow children for just 1 month of the year - this being another option. Any comments or views appreciated.
hi Pete, I have sent this to some people that may know more about stats and that sort of thing.
what I've read, in the next 20 years it's estimated that 30% (some studies say 25% already are) of people in Europe on reaching 45 will probably not have children, Germany is already at that point.
I know that i chose my honeymoon spot for the that it was Child Free, there were many places to choose from and this stood out just because it mentioned it was child free. pretty much everyone there was there for the same reason, it was however a smallish place of about 40 resort huts.
The other thing, this is a big generalisation, as there are many different reasons for being child free, but childfree people often have more disposable income and are more likely to travel further, more often and for longer.
I'd love a good child free stop off between the UK and Australia, a week or two of peace and relaxation, cut the jetlag down and be fresh for catching up with family.

The childfree revolution is here! Yes Pete, there are loads of people who are childfree by choice and this sounds like the ultimate destination for us. Also of course, some people who have children want to get away from them from time to time (second honeymoon etc.) and again this would be perfect. It certainly sounds like the kind of place where kids might be bored anyway and there are plenty of hotels that are 'family friendly' to cater for them.
Be bold, be childfree!
Pete, my partner and I went to a childfree spa retreat in Italy a couple of years ago and it was fantastic! Total peace and relaxation. I can't imagine why anyone would want to go to a retreat where there are children anyway, it kind of defeats the purpose!
