This sort of thing used to happen a lot in tourist hotspots across Europe during the 80s and 90s, mainly bus stops and petrol stations where buses laiden with people that weren't going to be back in the area again. The weird thing again is the scam artist would actually carve the block of wood into a pretty good replica. Often items in the 90s were video cameras, they'd put the stickets etc. in the right places and make the block the same shape and paint it, but would demonstrate with a legit real camera and then make a switch, only when you opened the box on the bus did you find out about the switch. best to buy from a trusted shop!
