I can't believe how much people spend on virtual items, very very shocked, this is amazing: The Year In Virtual Goods By The Numbers
this is just plain scary:
$7,300,000,000: expected global revenue generated by the virtual goods industry in 2010. This is huge, considering the $60 billion generated in 2009 by the video game industry as a whole, and clearly shows that browser-based gaming is making great strides.
$2,100,000,000: The projected size of the US virtual goods market in 2011.
I mean I live in a fairly online world, I've been working online for many companies since October 1994, I live on the other side of the world to the majority of my family and friends, and since I broke my collar bone and tore a tendon in my ankle my world has been more and more online... but here's the thing I've never bought a virtual good. I've bought 1000's of goods through sites such as Amazon.co.uk Music: CDs, back-catalogue, vinyl and more and Play.com (UK): DVDs, Music CDs, MP3s, Video Games, Books, Electronics & Gadgets - Free Delivery
I can't remember when I was last in a travel agent or on the phone trying to book a hotel, I've been booking flights online since the mid 90's. I game (xbox/PC) online, but I would never pay to get a better avatar setting or a better weapon. gah! This just infuriates me so much, they're pixels people! If you want them take a screen shot of them, then send it as an email attachment, don't pay 5p for them!
If you want to give someone a present, give them something real, a back of m&ms would be better than a pixelated easter egg!
